I recently went on a vacation with my friends and my now fiancé in Cabo, Mexico, and it was quite the experience. We had to wear masks, get our temperature taken, and had to disinfect the bottom of our shoes before entering any place of business. Don't get me wrong; it was still a memorable trip. We had a fantastic time relaxing, eating tacos, enjoying the ocean while staying and feeling safe. I even had a great time dressing up for every occasion since I’ve been accumulating all my vacation outfits for Mexico since spring.

To give you an idea of what it was like to travel to Cabo during a pandemic, I've provided some answers below to the most commonly asked questions I’ve received.

"We can travel to Mexico?!"

Yes, you can still travel to Mexico! Cabo officially opened on June 15th, 2020. No one at the airport stopped us or asked us why we were there. We still had to go through customs and sign immigration forms.⁣ To be honest, we were quite surprised about how easy it was.

"What was it like at the airport?"

We traveled from Las Vegas to Dallas first then Mexico. We had to wear masks the whole time – except when we were eating and drinking, of course. Everyone was advised to social distance at the airport and had to wear face covers on the plane at all times. If you do not have one, the airlines will provide one for you. It was mandatory, but I was shocked to see our flight be fully booked. I thought we had to social distance on the plane, but each seat was occupied - and we were not separated from other passengers.

"Do I need to quarantine for 14 days?"

No, you do not need to quarantine for two weeks. Mexico will not send you back home. ⁣You do have to fill out a COVID-19 screening form before leaving the airport.

"What is Mexico doing to prevent the spread of the virus?"

The airport had disinfecting areas where travelers can clean the bottom of their shoes. You have to step on a tray of solution before entering the building. Also, there were many hand sanitizer dispensers installed in several areas. Each traveler is also required to get their temperature checked before going through security.

"Did the airlines serve food and drinks?"

The airlines will give you snacks and water as soon as you board the plane. They will not serve any other food or alcoholic beverages to avoid contact with passengers. Unless you're flying first class, then, of course, you'll have more perks.⁣

"Are places in Cabo open?"

A lot of the restaurants with an outdoor patio are open. Many of the clubs or bars were NOT when we went in August 2020. There were stores where you can go to tequila tasting though! It was a good alternative since the bars were closed.

Many businesses will also take your temperature and again, "no mask, no service." If you decide to travel to Cabo, make sure you have multiple with you.

"What activities can travelers do during this time?"

We mostly stayed in the house and hung out at the pool, but we couldn’t leave Mexico without enjoying its magnificent sights! Below are just some of the things travelers can do in Mexico.

  1. Book a guided ATV or four-wheeler tour - Many outdoor excursions and tours were available. My friends and I rented four-wheelers and road along side the ocean. It was a blast! I highly recommend booking a tour. There’s nothing quite like it.

  2. Spend the day at the beach - Luckily, the beaches were still open to the public. We went to the gorgeous Chileno Beach. It was at max capacity and everyone was keen on social distancing which was nice.

  3. Go tequila tasting - As I mentioned above, there are places where you can go tequila tasting! It’s a great way to learn about different types of drinks and have a good old time with your friends.

  4. Rent a charter yacht - One of the most memorable things we did in Cabo was seeing the Arch of Cabo. What better way to travel to this place than on a charter yacht! The beaches were so beautiful. I was wish we were able to explore it, but unfortunately it was closed so travelers can continue to social distance.

I hope I shed some light on what it was like to travel to Mexico during this time. I know many are still weary, but if you take the steps to protect yourself and others, we might all be able to enjoy the great outdoors again safely and more frequently.
